Four-Star Resort and Spa with Ski Hill and Indoor Water Park
From the summit of The Mountain Top—Grand Geneva Resort & Spa’s onsite ski hill—you can get a panoramic view of the resort’s 1,300-acre property. Located 3 miles from the shores of Geneva Lake, the AAA Four Diamond retreat is like multiple resorts rolled into one superresort; it has two championship golf courses and an indoor water park (passes may be purchased but are not included).
There are plenty of onsite activities in the fall and winter. You can relax in the indoor and outdoor hot tubs at Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark, a sprawling facility with a lazy river and twisting water slides. There's also an indoor sports complex at the resort that features a 35-foot rock-climbing wall and tennis courts. In November, Grand Geneva kicks off its Christmas in the Country celebration. The five-week calendar of festivities includes visits from Santa Claus, displays of trimmed trees and gingerbread houses, and trolley tours of the resort’s outdoor holiday decorations. With this Getaway’s third and fourth options, you’ll get two tickets to Grand Geneva’s A Christmas Portrait, an all-new musical that captures favorite holiday memories.
During downtime, you can relax in a deluxe courtside room in the resort’s ranch-style lodge, which was inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The onsite restaurants cater to a wide variety of tastes, from the signature filet medallions at Geneva ChopHouse to handmade pasta with lobster from Ristoranté Brissago. Two cafés and a pair of bars and grills offer casual dining.
Lake Geneva, Wisconsin: Lakeside Mansions and Historical Museums
Located within 90 miles of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison, Lake Geneva has become one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations for recreation. Geneva Lake—a gaping gulf of fresh water ripe for swimming, leisurely sails, water skiing, and tubing—is the resort town’s biggest draw in the summer. Admire the scenery by taking a stroll on the Geneva Lake Shore Path, a 21-mile walkway planned by early settlers that stretches around the entire lake. Along the way, you’ll pass expansive gardens and the opulent estates that helped the town earn the nickname “Newport of the West.”
In the winter, outdoor activities range from sledding and snowshoeing in Big Foot Beach State Park to ice-fishing on Geneva Lake. There's also plenty to do indoors. The Geneva Lake Museum takes visitors back in time with re-created late 19th- and early 20th-century shops, and the 1897-era Yerkes Observatory is home to the world's largest refracting telescope.
