Four-Star Villas on Quiet Beach on Riviera Maya
A family-friendly resort, Las Villas Akumal features thatched villas just a few steps from the Caribbean Sea. The resort is a half-hour drive from the nightlife of Playa del Carmen, but it’s far enough away to feel quiet and secluded. The beach is lined with swaying palm trees and nesting sea turtles; small coral reefs teeming with tropical fish lie below the waves. You can borrow snorkeling gear or hop in a kayak to explore the water—the resort rents out both for free.
All of the villas have fully stocked kitchens; ocean-view units also have private terraces with hammocks. The beachside pool area is surrounded by shaded lounge chairs. Up on the roof, the resort's restaurant serves grouper baked in banana leaves, jicama and papaya salad, and other traditional dishes of the Yucatán Peninsula.
Akumal, Mexico: Small Resort Town Along Riviera Maya
Akumal is situated just south of Playa del Carmen along the Riviera Maya, a popular tourism destination on the Yucatán Peninsula. There are plenty of snorkeling spots along the town’s white-sand beaches, particularly in Yal-ku Lagoon, where the brackish water teems with tropical fish. Farther out, you can go scuba diving along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which stretches along the entire peninsula and shelters five species of sea turtles and one of the world’s largest congregations of whale sharks.
The area is also home to a number of Mayan archeological sites, including the ruins of Tulum, located just a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Tulum is believed to have been one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya.
