5-Star Hotel with World-Class Dining and Hollywood Glamour
From the start, the Cipriani family's worldwide network of restaurants and bars has enjoyed loyalty from celebrities; Ernest Hemingway and Humphrey Bogart were regulars at the flagship spot in 1931. So it's fitting that the family’s latest venture, a signature hotel by the name of Mr. C Beverly Hills, is situated in Hollywood's backyard. The hotel, led by fourth-generation brothers Ignazio and Maggio Cipriani, was named one of Fodor's top 5 new hotels in the country in 2011. It offers the Old-World elegance guests have come to expect with a dash of Old Hollywood flair.
In the lobby you'll find Mr. C's restaurant, which critic Jay Weston praised as having Italian dishes that are "a match for the very best in Milan and Venice." Try signature entrees, such as the baked tagliolini with fresh peas or the Chilean sea bass filleted at the table. You can also sample bellinis and carpaccio, a raw meat dish, both of which are said to have been invented by Giuseppe Cipriani in Venice more than 80 years ago. If you get a craving for pappardelle and sausage at 3 a.m., the kitchen also offers 24-hour room service.
During the day, guests gather at the hotel's 4,500-square-foot pool terrace. Plush day beds line the teak deck, and you can relax in private cabanas that feature flat-screen TVs.
Guest rooms have a chic 1950s aesthetic. Tufted leather headboards are set against handcrafted Italian chaises, and some tables are fashioned like faux midcentury trunk luggage with leather handles. The rooms also have the feel of an old movie set; you'll find vintage black-and-white film photography and adjustable spotlights amid the interiors. Head out to the private balcony in deluxe or premium rooms to take in panoramic views of Beverly Hills. Loft-style studio suites, on the other hand, have views of Los Angeles from a pair of private balconies.
Beverly Hills, Los Angeles: Star-Studded Neighborhood with High-End Shopping and Glamorous Nightlife
Mr. C is located on the southern edge of Beverly Hills, a glitzy Los Angeles neighborhood with quite possibly the most famous zip code in the world: 90210. Couture shops and designer labels such as Chanel, Prada, and Harry Winston line the cobblestone streets of Rodeo Drive, which is less than a half mile from the hotel. You'll also find a handful of spas here, many of which invent decadent massage and facial services that soon become standard nationwide. Among these is the new on-site spa at Mr. C with two treatment rooms, two changing rooms with steam showers, a relaxation area, and a manicure and pedicure station.
There's a grittier vibe to the nearby Sunset Strip. It's been a popular hangout for edgy musicians and their groupies since the 1960s. Groups such as The Doors and Mötley Crüe got famous at raucous clubs such as Whisky A Go-Go, which is still a boisterous nightspot today. Just north on Hollywood Boulevard, photo-snapping tourists gather at the Walk of Fame around star plaques bearing the handprints of the rich and famous.
