Lincoln City, Oregon: Artists’ Community on Rugged Pacific Coast
Every year from October through May, local artists create thousands of colorful glass floats to hide along Lincoln City's 7.5-mile public beachfront. Anyone who finds an float gets to keep it, along with a certificate of authenticity and information about the artist who created it. The project, dubbed Finders Keepers, is a reminder of the blown-glass floats that used to wash up on these shores after having been used by Japanese fishermen on the other side of the Pacific.
Colorful glass isn't the only thing you'll find along Lincoln City's beaches. They're home to lots of local wildlife, including harbor seals and sanderlings. Gray whales migrate through the area from mid-November through mid-May, but are most easily spotted in December and January. The team at Sandcastle Beachfront Motel are more than happy to help guests fine tours out of Depot Bay.
Lincoln City's flourishing art scene can be sampled just a short distance inland. The town's streets are peppered with antique shops and galleries where you can purchase paintings, ceramics, and glassworks. You can watch a glassblowing demonstration at Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio or learn to blow your own float, bowl, or paperweight.
A few blocks north of downtown lies Tanger Outlets, an outdoor shopping complex with more than 50 outlets and factory stores. Chinook Winds Casino is worth checking out on days when it's too chilly to go to the beach. The oceanfront casino boasts slots, table games, bingo, and a full calendar of concerts and comedy shows.
