Sandusky, Ohio: Resort Towns on Lake Erie with Sandy Beaches and Historic Monuments
Located on the banks of Lake Erie and almost exactly halfway between Cleveland and Toledo, Sandusky earned the top spot on Forbes’s list of Best Places to Live Cheaply for its picturesque lake views and premier theme parks. Premiere among these parks is Cedar Point, known as “the roller coaster capital of the world.” The resort town is also famous for being a safe haven for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad. In 2007, the “Path to Freedom” sculpture—a life-sized representation of an African American family—was constructed in Facer Park using 800 feet of metal chains.
Due to its beautiful natural scenery, Sandusky has developed into one of Ohio’s premier tourist destinations. You can watch the sun set over Lake Erie on one of its many sandy beaches, or spot rare birds—including golden-winged warblers and piping plovers—in the Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve. It’s also a gateway to the region’s pristine islands. Scenic ferries and tour boats regularly shuttle passengers to Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay, where you can fish for perch and walleye and tour historic homes.
