Family-Friendly Resort with Indoor Water Activities near the Atlantic Ocean
At Sea Crest Oceanfront Resort—set along the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach—there are plenty of aquatic activities to keep both kids and grownups occupied all year long. When the weather is cool, guests can take advantage of the indoor covered pool, hot tub, and lazy river. In the summertime, the fun moves to the outdoor water park, which has an enclosed water slide, a submarine-shipwreck play zone, and a second lazy river dotted with colorful tubes. Activities such as kayaking and jet skiing take place along the beach just a few steps away.
Upstairs, Sea Crest’s oceanfront efficiencies and junior suites all have private balconies with nice ocean views. The suite’s basic kitchens have microwaves, ovens, and refrigerators where you can store leftovers or resuscitate a snowman suffering from heat stroke. You can also grab some food at Malibu Beach Bar & Oceanfront Snack Bar, which nightly hosts live music and karaoke (open seasonally).
Broadway at the Beach, a popular outdoor shopping center, lies just a few miles northwest of the resort. Souvenir shops, restaurants, and kid-friendly attractions line its pedestrian-only boulevards. The center is also home to a number of nightspots, such as Celebrity Square, a New Orleans–style stretch of bars and clubs. The resort is a half-mile walk from the popular Family Kingdom theme park, too, which has thrill rides and a water park.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Sandy Beaches, Seaside Golf Courses, and Classic Amusement-Park Rides
Myrtle Beach is the crown jewel of South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of white, sandy beaches along the Atlantic seaboard that draws surfers, fishers, and kayakers. The city was named one of the best vacation spots in the United States for a family by USA Today, in part because of its wooden boardwalk, which stretches for more than a mile and buzzes with carnival games and amusement-park rides. Hop into the SkyWheel Ferris wheel’s glass-floored gondolas, surrounded by more than a million LED lights, for a panoramic view of the city below.
Less than 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, the tiny fishing village of Murrells Inlet provides a tranquil contrast to the boardwalk's hustle and bustle. At Brookgreen Gardens, more than 1,400 original sculptures stand amid sprawling floral gardens and massive, moss-covered oak trees that have been around for centuries. Murrells Inlet is also home to the Tom Fazio–designed TPC Myrtle Beach golf course, 1 of more than 100 courses in the area that helped Myrtle Beach earn its title as the seaside golf capital of the world.
