The North End, located northeast of the TD Garden (where the Celtics play), lays claim to one of the country's most authentic Little Italy districts, complete with dueling cannoli bakeries and harbor-side restaurants. Just down the street, historic Beacon Hill has boutique shopping, gorgeous private homes, and the enchanting Boston Common.

  • Onsite dining: At Finch restaurant, which serves local favorites such as lobster mac and clam chowder, plus interesting cocktails, beers, and wine
  • See the Celtics: At the TD Garden, just a short walk away
  • Fitness room: Equipped with free weights, cardio machines, a big TV, and complimentary towels and water
  • Hotel for dogs: Bring along your pet for a $50 deposit.

Boston's West End: Bruins, Celtics, and a History of Controversy

Though not as well known as its next-door neighborhoods—the North End and Beacon Hill—Boston's West End nevertheless has a powerful history and several vibrant attractions all its own. The area once housed a large community of Italians and Jews, only to be targeted for an urban renewal project in the 1950s, possibly as political payback from the newly elected mayor. You can learn more about the area's history at the West End Museum.

Today, the neighborhood may be best known as the home of the Boston Celtics and Bruins, who play at the TD Garden. In the offseason, the Garden hosts everything from UFC fights to major concert acts. For a taste of local history, pay a visit to the former Charles Street Jail, which has been converted into a luxury hotel. The 1851 building kept some famous names behind bars, including Malcolm X, notorious Mayor James Michael Curley, and the controversially imprisoned anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti.
