Oceanside, California: Coastal City with Family-Friendly Beaches and Historic Spanish Mission
Home to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside was once defined by its longtime military presence. Thanks to its sunny climate and active harbor, however, the SoCal city has recently emerged as a prime vacation destination. Nearly 4 miles of sandy beaches are stretched out along this part of the Pacific Ocean, and surfers, paddle boarders, and boaters share the water year-round.
There’s always action at the historical Oceanside Pier. At 1,192 feet, it’s one of the longest piers on the West Coast. Locals and tourists line the wooden slats to fish for halibut and sea bass, or spot dolphins and seals through coin-operated binoculars. Steps from here you’ll find the Harbor Village shopping center. It has an old ice cream parlor with shakes and saltwater taffy, as well as many boat charters clustered along the shore.
One of Oceanside’s most popular attractions isn’t near the ocean at all. Mission San Luis Rey is the largest of California’s 21 missions, and also one of the most beautiful. Take a tour through this 18th-century landmark and you’ll see hand carved wooden doors, elaborate wall paintings, and hammered copper art. There’s also a cemetery here where some of California’s most important religious leaders are buried, including the Picos and the Bandinis.
