Riverfront Bed and Breakfast Houses Microbrewery in Napa County

There are few spots as serene as California Wine Country, and the 130-year-old Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery provides a front-row seat. Set along the banks of the Napa River, the inn houses both a microbrewery and a garden patio restaurant where live jazz music provides an elegant soundtrack to hearty dinners.

During the day, you can explore the numerous sprawling vineyards near the inn. Located in downtown Calistoga, August Briggs Winery lets visitors perch at the marble-top bar in its tasting room to sample chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. For a draft of something frothier, head back to the hotel, where the onsite Napa Valley Brewing Company produces Calistoga wheat ale, porter, and seasonal brews. The $20 dining credit included with this Getaway is valid at the riverfront restaurant and brewery, where chefs prepare lamb shanks ($25) along with steamed clams and mussels ($15.25). The hotel can get noisy, since the downstairs bar is open until 1 a.m., but Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday are normally quiet nights.

Stationed on the second floor, the inn's 18 guest rooms have shared baths—showers and restrooms are located down the hall—and are simply adorned with white wood-frame beds and pedestal sinks. The rooms have neither phones nor televisions, thus leaving you with more time to construct origami swans from the sheets.

Calistoga, California: Casual Wine Country Town Dotted with Healing Spas

After a visit to Napa Valley's hot springs in 1859, millionaire Samuel Brannan planned to develop a resort there that would rival Saratoga Springs. After an especially festive evening, Brannan slurred that he would create the "Calistoga of Sarafornia." The name stuck, and today the little town at the north end of Napa Valley is still known for its more than two dozen holistic spas.

Calistoga Inn is located on the old-timey main street, which is lined with cozy eateries, art galleries, and vending machines stocked with snuff and monocles. More than 30 wineries are scattered throughout the lush countryside surrounding the town. One of them is even housed in a transplanted Tuscan castle.
