Wilderness Canoe Trip and Camping in Algonquin Park

Algonquin Provincial Park has a 7,500-square-kilometer swath of wilderness. That’s larger than the state of Delaware. The landscape is speckled with hundreds of lakes; one of the most popular ways to navigate the park is by portaging, or carrying, a light canoe from one lake to the next. Call of the Wild, a canoe outfitter based in Algonquin, leads tours of this gorgeous area.

Along the shores here, you can find wild animals, including moose, bears, deer, and even wolves. The park's resident wolf pack is harmless to humans, and sometimes wolves come close enough to engage in howling sessions, during which a guide imitates a howl to see if the wolves respond with their own cries. The call of the wild, indeed. Click here to see the full itinerary for the three-day canoe trip.

Day 1: A staff member can pick you up from the Finch subway station in Toronto (C$160 fee), or you can choose to drive yourself and meet the group up north. After that, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the shores of Algonquin Park's Rock Lake, and the guides will host a safety debriefing. That’ll prepare you for a three-hour paddle across Pen Lake. Rock Lake is situated less than a quarter-mile (300-m) portage to the first wilderness camp.

Back at camp, you'll learn how to pitch your tent and craft a freshly prepared dinner beside a blazing campfire. Come nightfall, there's little to no light pollution, so you'll be able to gaze at the clearly visible Milky Way and its more obscure sister galaxy, the Twix.

Day 2: You'll spend the first part of the day exploring the lake. It’s not uncommon to spot moose around here, as they frequent the shores. In the afternoon, you’re free to paddle up a nearby river or portage once more to another lake. Depending on the excursion, you might cruise past an old dam used for logging or carry your canoe across several beaver dams.

Day 3: After an early breakfast, the group will pack up camp and begin the paddle home. At 11 a.m., travelers will head back to Toronto, where they'll be dropped off at Finch subway station around 4 p.m.
