Situated just steps from the Pacific Ocean, the AAA Three Diamond–rated Cambria Shores Inn has unbeatable views of the water everywhere you turn. Take a seat in the adirondack chairs on the landscaped lawn to enjoy a sunset, or wander down the boardwalk to Moonstone Beach itself, just a few steps away.

The comfy, modern guest rooms are equipped with fireplaces, flat-screen TVs, and DVD players—feel free to borrow a flick from the more than 200 titles in the DVD library. To unwind, you can relax in your own soaking tub or opt for an in-room spa treatment, such as an hour-long massage or facial.

Each morning at 8 a.m., the innkeepers deliver a breakfast basket to your doorstep. It comes with fruit, fresh-baked pastries, and a carafe of orange juice. The Cambria Shores Inn gladly accommodates dogs, though several rooms are set aside for those who don’t have dogs or have pet allergies.

Cambria, California: Scenic Beaches near Historic Hearst Castle

The central California town of Cambria features a charming downtown area that is home to boutique shops and independent eateries. The town’s principle attribute, though, remains its miles of unfettered coastline. Swing by Elephant Seal Beach to glimpse the namesake animals, which can weigh up to 5,000 pounds. Viewing is best from December through March.

About 12 miles north of Cambria stands Hearst Castle, the 165-room mansion of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Completed in 1947, the palatial home sits on a 127-acre plot embellished with gardens, three pools, a zoo, and a private airport. Several guided tours take place daily. Reservations are strongly recommended.
