See Lions, Leopards, Giraffes, and Elephants on Safari Through Kenya

The 1985 film version of Out of Africa, loosely based on Isak Dinesen's autobiographical account of life on a colonial coffee plantation, is one of the most romantic movies ever made. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford play a wealthy landowner and big-game hunter who fall into a complicated and ultimately doomed love affair amid the gorgeous landscapes of eastern Africa. The movie was filmed in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve, an immense swath of protected land where lions roam and zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest migrate annually from July to October. During this 10-day guided Kenya safari from Classic Escapes, you'll be immersed in this fascinating setting and have a chance to get up-close glimpses of cheetahs, leopards, sunbirds, and hyenas.

Days 1–3: The trip starts out with an overnight flight from Washington, DC, to Nairobi. After arrival, you'll be driven to Nairobi Serena Hotel, an elegant resort in the central district of the city, overlooking Central Park.

After breakfast the next morning, you'll board a minibus and head to Mount Kenya National Park, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site located about three hours from Nairobi. Overnight accommodations are provided by Serena Mountain Lodge set at the foot of the country's highest peak—the majestic Mount Kenya. The lodge is built on stilts and has an open-air viewing deck overlooking a watering hole and natural salt lick frequented by elephants and buffalo. You can take an optional forest walk through the canopy or stick close to the lodge and watch playful Sykes monkeys swoop in for leftovers on the deck.

Days 4–5: Then it's on to the grassy plains near Mount Kenya, where game drives through Ol Pejeta Conservancy supply a chance to see lions, elephants, and zebras up close in their natural habitat. You'll visit Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary, as well as the largest black-rhino sanctuary in East Africa. For two nights, the Sweetwaters Tented Camp serves as home base. To ensure even more wildlife viewing, the luxury tents (which are outfitted with private bathrooms) are perched on raised platforms near a watering hole.

Day 6: The next stop is Lake Nakuru National Park, where huge Lake Elmenteita is the gathering spot for hundreds of thousands of brilliant pink flamingos. The park abounds with animals, including endangered Rothschild giraffes, hippos, rhinos, and leopards. At the end of the day, turn in at Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp, where each luxurious tent has its own private veranda.

Days 7–10: The final leg of the trip brings you to Kenya's famed Maasai Mara in the Northern Serengeti. The nature reserve is often called the "Jewel of Africa," and it's not hard to see why. People of the Maasai tribes tend their cattle on the plains as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and jackals stalk the grasslands. You'll ride along the plains in a minibus to get a good look at the animal inhabitants, then head for two nights to the Mara Serena Safari Lodge. Built in the style of a traditional Maasai manyatta, the lodge features quaint standalone rooms overlooking the Mara River, a great spot for watching the annual wildebeest migration. After two days in the Maasai Mara, you'll head back to Nairobi to catch your return flight to Washington, DC.
