Jet-Set Between Great Barrier Reef and Sydney
This vacation spotlights Hayman Island, a private isle surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef; and Sydney, Australia's most populous city. While you’re in the land down under, you’ll stay at 5-star hotels. The package also includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX) via Virgin Australia, or another airport for an additional fee. You’ll start by flying across the pond to Brisbane, where you’ll board a domestic flight to Hamilton Island. There, a member of the Hayman staff will assist you in making the trip to Hayman Island, a private resort island that sits near the northernmost point of the Whitsunday Islands, near the Outer Barrier Reef. The moon-shaped island draws visitors for its varied landscapes, which range from fragrant mangrove to dense rainforests and rocky inlets and sandy beaches.
You’ll spend five days relaxing and soaking in the sights at Hayman Island, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The best way to take in the scenery is by snorkeling or scuba diving in the Coral Sea, where you could come face-to-face with tropical fish, sea turtles, and colorful coral formations.
On land, there are several hiking trails that offer well-manicured paths through the wilderness. It's a bit of a hike to reach Cook's Lookout—the island’s tallest point—but the spot rewards diligent hikers with scenic views of the resort and the water.
Accommodations: 5-Star Hayman, Great Barrier Reef Resort
Next, you'll travel south by (boat) launch transfer to Hamilton Island to board your flight to Sydney. Fodor's ranks Sydney “among the most beautiful cities on the planet.” Located on Australia’s southeast coast along the Tasman Sea, it’s the continent’s most populous city.
Here, you’ll spend four nights at the luxurious Four Seasons Sydney, a 5-star hotel close to some of Sydney’s best-loved sights. You’ll be a short walk from two landmarks—the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. While you’re here, you’re free to explore the city at your leisure—you could shop through the specialty shops at The Rocks, a harborside neighborhood that dates back Sydney’s early days as a British colony, or gaze at the southern hemisphere’s starry skies at the Sydney Observatory.
