Romantic Guest Rooms at Historical Countryside Estate

In 2010, Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast was named the mid-Atlantic’s most romantic inn in by readers of Karen Brown’s travel guides. Based on appearance alone, it’s easy to see why. The postcolonial estate—originally built between 1825 and 1837—is situated on 5 acres in the Brandywine Valley, a region famous for its mansions and idyllic countryside. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the inn transports guests back to a quaint, peaceful time via country furnishings and decor.

The innkeepers take extra steps to maintain an elegant atmosphere. Every day, they host an afternoon tea where you can sample treats baked by innkeeper Rick Carro. For an additional charge, grab a chocolate-truffle torte with key-lime caramel sauce or another after-dinner dessert, and then take it back to your room. Every morning, Rick prepares three gourmet breakfast options. Omelets are made with vegetables from the estate gardens, and sausages are smoked in house with apple wood or mesquite. Rick takes special pride in his scrambled eggs, which the inn’s website describes as “among the finest you will ever have.”

The rooms available with this deal can be found in the charming yellow Main House, the Carriage House or the Springhouse. All rooms have private baths, flat screen TVs, and high-speed wireless Internet access. Many have canopied beds, fireplaces, or private decks overlooking the gardens or meadows. The Springhouse sits atop the foundation of the original estate barn and architectural elements of the barn are found in many Springhouse and Carriage House rooms.

The Brandywine Valley: Cultural and Historical Countryside in Pennsylvania

Located in Pennsylvania’s southeast corner, the Brandywine Valley is covered with hills, valleys, and historic landmarks. During the early 20th century, wealthy families began building extravagant estates here; many have been converted into museums. One such property is the Longwood Gardens. This 1,077-acre estate, once owned by the illustrious DuPont family, features 20 indoor and outdoor gardens, an extensive fountain system, and the Orchid House. The DuPonts’ legacy also extends to the Hagley Museum and Library, the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, and the Nemours Mansion & Gardens.

The Brandywine River Museum of Art showcases the legacy of the Wyeth family. N. C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth were all influential visual artists in their time, and you can admire the work of all three generations in this restored mill-house museum.

About Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast

It’s easy to see why readers of the travel-guide series Karen Brown’s Guides voted Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast the Most Romantic Inn in the Mid-Atlantic in 2010. For starters, the inn—originally built circa 1825–1837 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places—hasn’t lost any of its Old-World charm. Queen Anne–style reproductions such as white-draped canopy beds are found throughout the property. In the Main House, guests can gather on the porch or in front of the living room’s fireplace to socialize. You can even take afternoon tea out on a shaded patio next to the original summer kitchen and root cellar. The 5-acre grounds also feature manicured gardens and an innkeepers’ quarters.

Located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley, Fairville Inn is close to many local attractions. From this point, visitors are fewer than 10 minutes away from the stunning horticultural displays at Longwood Gardens and the antique-laden Winterthur Museum. You can also tour many local wineries that are clustered along the Brandwine Valley wine trail.
