Top Reasons to Stay at Flying Saddle Resort

  • This newly constructed lodge sits at the entrance to the Snake River Canyon, a popular spot located about 40 minutes south of Jackson.
  • Year-round, you can hike through the nearby mountains, go fishing in the Palisades Reservoir, or float a raft down the Snake River.
  • The hotel’s steak-and-seafood restaurant serves specialties such as an 8-ounce prime rib ($17) and grilled Copper River salmon ($21). Option 3 with this Getaway includes a $25 dining credit; all guests get a complimentary continental breakfast.
  • Separate from the lodge, there are contemporary luxury cabins featuring interior log siding and plush leather sofas. Standard and deluxe rooms are more traditional, and some are big enough to hold a family of four.

  • Landscaped gardens and waterfall ponds line the 7-acre property, which stretches along the banks of the Snake River.
  • Though the river is only a minute away, you can also swim in the hotel’s indoor pool.

Alpine/Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Fishing, Hiking, and Skiing in Old West Frontier

Alpine is a tiny community in western Wyoming that's about 40 minutes south of Jackson. It rests against the mountainsides at the intersection of the Snake, Salt, and Greys Rivers, which flow into Palisades Lake. The town’s unique, lovely landscape of mountains, forests, rivers, and reservoirs makes it a scenic stop for year-round outdoor recreation. Fly-fishing and whitewater rafting are popular during the spring and summer, and the town maintains more than 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.

About 40 miles north, Jackson may be the only place on earth where you might see a rodeo cowboy, rock climber, and Hollywood starlet on the same block. The former frontier outpost draws visitors of all stripes for its special blend of Old West flavor and jaw-dropping natural beauty. Old-fashioned saloons and high-end galleries line the town square, but a few miles north in Grand Teton National Park, you’ll find nothing but wilderness.

Though summer and winter are Jackson’s high seasons, you’ll encounter lighter crowds in spring and spectacular foliage in the fall. As the snows begin to melt in May, the rivers swell and fill with rapids. There are about a dozen rafting outfitters in Jackson that run whitewater trips on the Snake River and scenic floats on a calmer stretch upstream, where you’ll have a chance to see eagles, moose, and pelicans.

We had a rude waitress for our dinner in the restaurant on Saturday night that made our dining experience not very pleasant.

The rooms were shabby, and not what I would call a resort, the location was not what I had expected, no views or anything like that. Just a busy highway that you could hear all night long. The staff was not very friendly either. They just didn't go out of their way to treat you nice or give you any suggestions on what to do in the area. I thought star valley would have more activities, it was really far away from Jackson and the national parks, a good 45 minute drive. So, basically we were stuck there unless we drove all the way to Jackson to find anything to do.

The accommodations were very nice. The staff was extremely unhelpful and couldn't even provide a map of the area. The food in the restaurant was horrible.
