Days 1-3: Beijing
Upon arrival in Beijing, you’ll unwind at the 4.5-star Kempinski Hotel Beijing, located in the heart of China’s capital city.
You’ll have the entire next day to explore Beijing at your leisure. Take advantage of an optional tour to the Forbidden City, the former home of China’s emperors and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Summer Palace and the Panda Zoo ($62 per person, includes lunch).
Days 4-6: From the Great Wall to Japan
From Beijing, the tour heads about two hours north to the Great Wall of China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by millions each year. During a day-tour, you will see that contrary to popular belief, the structure is not one continuous wall—instead, it’s several segments built over the course of 2000 years. The imposing wall stretches throughout China’s diverse landscape for more than 5,000 miles. After your Great Wall visit, you have the option to enjoy a peking duck dinner followed by the Legend of Kung Fu show, a special Shaolin Kung Fu stage performance that blends music, martial arts, and a moving story ($53 per person).
A final leisure day in Beijing can be used to enjoy other activities, such as a tour of Gaobeidian Village, a picturesque community where you will visit a typical Chinese school to see for yourself how children are taught in China. The highlight of this very special tour is an opportunity to join a village family in preparing and sharing a traditional Chinese dinner ($45 per person).
The next day, travelers will board a flight to Tokyo, Japan’s buzzing capital city. The 4-star Keio Plaza Hotel will be your headquarters during your time in Tokyo.
Days 7-10: Tokyo
On Day 7, you’ll take a full-day tour that highlights some of Tokyo’s most notable landmarks, including the 1,000-foot Toyko Tower, an Eiffel Tower-inspired structure with an observatory. The next stop is the century-old Meiji Shrine, tucked within an evergreen forest. This Shinto-style shrine, constructed of Japanese cypress and green copper roofing, honors the late emperor Meiji.
The tour will also swing by the Imperial Palace, where visitors can freely tour the surrounding gardens and its famous cherry blossom trees when in season. Along the way, you’ll see remnants of the Edo Castle and the home of the ruling emperor, which is surrounded by a wide moat. The tour concludes in Ginza, Tokyo’s most famous up-market shopping, dining and entertainment district.
Travelers are free to spend the last two days of the tour at their leisure, or they can embark on an optional trek to Mt. Fuji ($175 per person, includes lunch), the country’s tallest mountain and an enduring symbol of Japan or enjoy an optional tour of the Shinjuku ward and experience Japanese culture on a guided walking tour (approx. $80 per person).
