This 8-day tour treks up Turkey's 5,000-mile Aegean Coast and across the Dardanelles Strait to see the country's renowned Byzantine architecture, colorful bazaars, and religious sites. Guided tours highlight most of the trip, but there's also leisure time and interesting optional side trips (additional fees) that dig deeper into Turkey's history and culture.

Days 1–3: Kusadasi and Ephesus

Arrive in Izmir after an overnight flight via Istanbul, then travel the Aegean coast en route to Kusadasi, a former fishing village that has evolved into a glitzy coastal resort town.

On day 3, you'll head over to Ephesus for a walking tour of the ancient Greek and Roman city, with stops at several sacred sites, including the purported House of the Virgin Mary. You'll also see the Library of Celsus and the Temple of Hadrian's beautifully preserved Doric columns and mythological Greek statues.

Optional Add-on: See more friezes and statues of ancient Greek deities at the Museum of Ephesus, the ruins of St. John's Basilica, and the mountain village of Sirince ($45 per person)

Days 4–5: Pergamon, Troy, Canakkale

Further north, Pergamon is home to some of the Mediterranean's most famous historical sites. Its Red Basilica dates back to the 2nd century, when it was built as a temple to worship Egyptian deities. The next stop is Asklepion, named after the Greek god of healing. As the name suggests, people once flocked to this ruined holistic center to indulge in the healing properties of its spring waters.

Next, the tour heads to Troy, the inspiration for Homer's Iliad. The ancient Greek city was the site of epic battles during the Trojan War. The tour then visits the UNESCO World Heritage site to see remnants of the city walls and a replica of the infamous wooden Trojan horse.

On day 5, an early morning ferry cruise crosses the Dardanelles Strait to the next stop, Gallipoli, the site of a crucial battle during World War I.

Days 6–8: Istanbul

The last leg of the tour is spent in Istanbul, Turkey's most culturally significant city and the crossroads of Asia and Europe. A city tour of Istanbul spotlights its Ottoman and Byzantine architecture, including the Blue Mosque, an early 17th-century landmark known for its opulent interior, trimmed in countless blue tiles and hundreds of stained glass windows.

The tour wraps up at Hagia Sophia, perhaps Turkey's most-famous site. Built in the 5th century AD, this massive domed Byzantine structure was originally constructed as a church, then became a mosque in the 15th century, and then converted into a museum in 1931.

Optional add-ons: On day 6, you can cruise the Strait of Bosphorus and browse the 350-year-old Egyptian Spice Bazaar ($55 per person). Alternatively, spend the evening on day 6 taking in a traditional Turkish dinner and folklore show ($80 per person). On day 7, take an optional tour of Topkapi Palace, once the estate for the Ottoman Sultans, to see the stately rooms that housed Istanbul's royalty for more than four centuries. After the Palace, the tour visits the famous Grand Bazaar, where you can shop for a dizzying array of textiles, hookahs, and hanging lamps ($50 per person).
