Quiet Cabins Along the Rio Frio

The Rio Frio, or “cold river” in Spanish, was so named because of its cool, clear waters fed by icy underground springs. It flows through southern Texas, from Kent down to Three Rivers, where it merges with the Atascosa and Nueces Rivers. Limestone bluffs and bald cypress trees line the shallow banks. Located about a two-hour drive west of San Antonio in Concan, Frio Country Resort occupies a particularly calm and secluded stretch of the river. While you’re here, enjoy 18 holes at the year-round Concan Golf Club, which cuts through the Frio Canyon along the river.

One-bedroom and two-bedroom cabins line the gentle waters. Take in the peaceful surroundings from the front porch, or walk up the road to the Frio Country Store. The store carries groceries so you can prepare meals in your cabin’s kitchen or on an outdoor grill. There are also a few local dining spots in the area.

Concan is just 90 miles west of San Antonio, but it feels a world away. With its thick cypress groves, sandy bluffs, and calm stretches of the Frio River, the town attracts visitors looking for unspoiled nature and the promise of peace and quiet.

Drive a few miles north and you’ll come to Garner State Park, where you can hike along scenic nature trails. An abundance of wildlife lives among its deep canyons and high mesas, from white-tailed deer to Rio Grande turkeys to golden-cheeked warblers.
