Quiet Cabins near River Tubing and Golf

The Rio Frio, or “cold river” in Spanish, was so named because of its cool, clear waters, which are fed by icy underground springs. It flows through southern Texas, from Kent down to Three Rivers, where it merges with the Atascosa and Nueces Rivers. Limestone bluffs and bald cypress trees line the shallow banks, shading kayakers and canoers paddling across its class I to III rapids. Frio Country Resort, about a two-hour drive west of San Antonio in Concan, occupies a particularly calm and secluded stretch of the river.

One-bedroom and two-bedroom cabins line the gentle waters. Take in the peaceful surroundings from the front porch or wade in with an inner tube rented from the Frio Country Store, just a short walk from the cabins. The store also carries groceries; prepare meals in your cabin’s kitchen or on outdoor grills.

In the onsite country-western restaurant, House Pasture Cattle Company, you can enjoy a juicy steak and an icy-cold Shiner Bock from the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, another small South Texas town. The resort also regularly hosts musical festivals—in October, step onto the 18-hole golf course to listen to live music, eat local barbecue, and participate in a golf tournament during Fall on the Frio .

Concan is just 90 miles west of San Antonio, but it feels a world away from the spirited metropolis. With its thick cypress groves, sandy bluffs, and calm stretches of the Rio Frio, the town attracts visitors looking for unspoiled nature and the promise of peace and quiet.

To the south, the Frio Caves are home to thousands of bats; the caves were frequently mined during the Civil War and World War I for guano deposits, which can be turned into saltpeter with a single genie wish. Though the original drying kilns still sit at the entrance, the caves’ real draw is at sunset, when you can watch thousands of bats flutter into the night sky. Drive a few miles north and you’ll come across Garner State Park. Its deep canyons and high mesas shelter an abundance of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, Rio Grande turkeys, and golden-cheeked warblers.
