Days 1—3: Budapest

Hungary’s capital is made up of two distinct areas, Buda and Pest, separated by the Danube River. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy some leisure time before setting out on guided tours that spotlight such landmarks as the Hungarian Parliament Building and Buda Castle.

  • Heroes’ Square: The centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Millennium Monument, a 118-foot obelisk surrounded by sculptures of influential figures from Hungarian history. The city’s Museum of Fine Arts is steps away.
  • Gellert Hill: Amid sweeping views of the city stand historic landmarks including a 19th-century fortress known as The Citadel.
  • Fisherman’s Bastion cuts an imposing figure with its seven whitewashed stone towers; this is also where you’ll find some of the best views of Pest.

Days 4—6: Vienna and Bratislava

You’ll also cruise Vienna’s Ringstrasse, a boulevard that encircles the city, passing the Empress Maria Theresa Monument along the way. After some free time in Vienna, the group will explore the historic district in nearby Bratislava, Slovakia.

  • Schonbrunn Palace once served as an exclusive summer getaway for Hapsburg royalty. The grounds include labyrinthine gardens, a zoo, and a castle filled with more than 1,000 Rococo-style rooms.
  • The Vienna State Opera has been a major music hall since it was built in 1896. It houses Gustav Mahler’s piano and a bronze bust of the Austrian composer by Rodin.

Days 7–9: Prague and Cesky Krumlov

Before reaching Prague, the tour stops off at Cesky Krumlov, where you can stroll cobblestone streets lined with Renaissance-era buildings and medieval taverns. Then it’s off to the City of a Hundred Spires—Prague.

  • Charles Bridge: More than two dozen baroque statues of Czech leaders top the balustrade of this iconic cobblestone bridge spanning the Vltava River.
  • Astronomical Clock: Mounted on the Old Town City Hall, this medieval timepiece features an hourly show starring figures of Jesus and the Apostles.
  • The Municipal House typifies art-nouveau elegance with its marble staircase and gold-trimmed concert hall topped with stained glass windows.<p>
