Days 1–3: Venice

The trip begins in Venice, where you’ll have a day to explore on your own before setting out on a guided city walking tour and visit to the islands of Murano. Venice has earned the nickname la serenissima, or “the most serene,” and it’s easy to see why. No cars are allowed in the city, so it’s far removed from the sounds of blaring horns and screeching tires.

The whimsical cityscape is interwoven with winding alleyways and canals; you can lose yourself on narrow cobblestone streets or glide past medieval bridges on a gondola. Some of Venice’s best-known architecture can be found right off the Grand Canal on the 9th-century St. Mark’s Square, where a bell tower and the gilded domes of St. Mark’s Basilica stand over a piazza scattered with pigeons.

  • Murano: A series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon, this area is recognized worldwide for its glass-making and lamp-working businesses.
  • Doge’s Palace: Today a museum, the city’s 14th-century palace was once the official residence of Venice’s chief magistrate. Eat like a local: Try squid-ink risotto—a Venetian staple—at any local restaurant, but be warned: it can stain your mouth black!
  • Optional excursion: Take a ride on one of Venice’s legendary gondolas, accompanied by music (extra fee).

Days 4–5: Pisa and Florence

After leaving Venice, you’ll drive through the Tuscan countryside via luxury motor coach, stopping in Pisa to see the Leaning Tower. Then you’ll head into Florence, home to some of the world’s finest art. Stops on the include city tour include the Accademia Gallery (which houses Michelangelo’s David), the Duomo, and the open-air art museum of Signoria Square.

  • Ponte Vecchio: One of the world’s most famous medieval bridges is lined with jewelry shops on both sides.
  • Optional excursion: Take a ride through the Tuscan hills to a villa where a traditional feast will be served, complete with wine, homemade pastas, and local meats.

Days 6–8: Assisi and Rome

Next, the tour journeys on to the small medieval town of Assisi in Umbria, where you’ll see Roman ruins, narrow streets, and the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco. Finally, you’ll reach Rome, where you’ll tour through the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.

  • Mingle with locals in Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s liveliest squares. Centered on three ornate fountains, it’s lined with bars and restaurants serving pizza al taglio (by the slice) and gooey pasta alla carbonara, a regional specialty.
  • The Colosseum: One of the Roman Empire’s great triumphs, the iconic amphitheater—the largest in the world—has been standing since 80 AD.
  • Optional excursion: Take a half-day walking tour of the grand piazzas of Rome to see Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the beautifully preserved Pantheon.
