Days 1–5: Cape Town

You’ll arrive in Cape Town, one of South Africa’s three capitals, on day 2. The next day, enjoy a driving tour of the mountainous landscape and a visit to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. The 17th-century Castle of Good Hope is one of the highlights of the Grand Parade, Cape Town’s central public square. You can explore it along with other historical attractions on a half-day guided city tour on day 4. You’ll also have leisure time to check out the city at your own pace.

  • Must-see attraction: Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve spans more than 17,000 acres and is home to rare plant and animal life, including Cape Mountain zebras, eland antelopes, and endangered fynbos shrublands.
  • Table Mountain Cableway: Weather permitting, the cable car takes you up to the summit, which is covered with wildflowers and shiny silver trees. Look down and you’ll see the city and distant Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served his prison sentence.
  • Optional excursions: a half-day cultural-diversity tour of Cape Town, a full-day winery tour, a hosted dinner, or great-white-shark cage diving (extra fees)

Days 6–7: St. Lucia Estuary and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve

Expect to see lots of local wildlife on this leg of the tour. It begins with a boat ride on the St. Lucia Estuary followed by a game drive at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve.

  • St. Lucia Estuary: Cruise the country’s largest coastal lagoon to see hippopotamuses and crocodiles; flamingos and white pelicans also flit along the shoreline.
  • See the Big Five: This game drive voyages through the Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, which shelters lions, elephants, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros.
  • Included meals: daily breakfast and 1 dinner

Days 8–9: Swaziland and Kruger National Park

Next up is Swaziland, a small country near Africa’s southeastern coast. On day 8 you’ll visit a glass factory, where artists blow and shape recycled glass in the shape of indigenous animals. The following day, drive back into South Africa to Kruger National Park, a massive game reserve.

  • Kruger National Park Game Reserve: The state of Connecticut could fit inside this massive wildlife park, one of Africa’s largest reserves. It’s home to zebras, lions, and cheetahs. An open-vehicle game drive departing early in the morning is included in your package. In addition, you can choose to take an optional afternoon game drive for additional game viewing (extra fees).

Days 10–12: Johannesburg and Return to United States

Finally, you’ll drive to Johannesburg along the Panorama Route, which winds through the red sandstone walls of the spectacular Blyde River Canyon and offers overhead views of Kruger National Park.

  • Soweto District: On day 11, you’ll stop at Nelson Mandela’s former residence and the Apartheid Museum, which documents the country’s apartheid history through historical photos and documents.
