Rome

Italy’s capital city is a treasure trove of ancient ruins and imperial churches. You’ll see many of the best sites during a hop-on, hop-off city tour during your second day here. Must-sees include the Colosseum, where up to 50,000 spectators used to watch gladiatorial games, animal hunts, and mythological dramas. You could spend a whole day touring the Vatican, the world’s smallest sovereign city-state. Among the innumerable works of art onsite, the hands-down showstopper is the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, nearly every inch of which is decorated with Michelangelo’s astounding frescoes.

For a stylish bite, head to one of the upscale cafes ringing the Piazza Navona. It’s also worth crossing the Tiber River to visit the Trastevere neighborhood, where medieval houses and numerous restaurants line cobblestone streets.

Florence

Once home to Michelangelo, Botticelli, and da Vinci (to name a few), Florence was the undisputed capital of the Italian Renaissance. This important legacy lives on in the art and architecture you can find here. There’s an astonishing array of cultural treasures in Florence, from the iconic Duomo to the Uffizi gallery’s collection of masterpieces, including Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.

Yet Florence is still a very modern city. Exclusive boutiques are situated between vibrant cafes where you can taste Tuscan specialties such as porcini mushroom ragu and bistecca alla fiorentina. Head into the surrounding countryside for a taste of northern Italy’s famously bucolic landscape, which is dotted with vineyards and monasteries. Your stay in Florence includes a hop-on, hop-off city tour, valid for all available routes.

Hotel: the Hotel De La Pace or similar

Venice

Venice looks much like it did 600 years ago, with bridged canals, winding streets, and grandiose palaces. You’ll explore this romantic landscape—and its most important historic sites—during a 1.5-hour walking tour. Piazza San Marco features a clock tower built in 1496 and a 9th-century bell tower—head to the top for magnificent views of the neighboring islands and the Dolomite Mountains. Inside the Basilica di San Marco, you’ll see mosaics and a Gothic altarpiece encrusted with nearly 2,000 precious gems. Other stops include the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, where more than two dozen doges are buried, and the shops along the Mercerie.
