Tour of Southwest Ireland

Cruise through three historical counties—Kerry, Cork, and Limerick—in a manual-shift rental car on this 8-day vacation from Great Value Vacations. Along the way, you’ll see medieval castles, shimmering loughs (lakes), and stunning views of the coastline. There’s no set itinerary, but we’ve included a few suggestions below. The vacation includes:

Limerick

  • Must-see attraction: Check out a trebuchet and other medieval relics at King John’s Castle, the city’s most famous attraction.
  • Claim to fame: Limerick served as a setting in Frank McCourt’s well-known memoir, Angela’s Ashes, though the city has been significantly revitalized since the 1930s and ‘40s.
  • Eat like a local: Sink your teeth into a chunk of Limerick ham, which is traditionally boiled in a sugary apple cider.

County Kerry

  • Must-do scenic drive: the Ring of Kerry; this 111-mile drive loops around the Iveragh Peninsula, passing beaches, medieval ruins, and loughs along the way.
  • Killarney National Park contains the country’s highest mountain range, MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, which rises more than 3,000 feet tall. Enjoy the views while hiking or driving the park.
  • Tour Ross Castle on the shores of Lough Leane. The restored 15th century castle offers guided tours March–October.

County Cork

  • Must-see attraction: Kissing the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle is an Irish tradition, but the real gem here is the castle’s magical gardens, which even has one of the country’s few poison plant gardens.
  • Sample local eats at The English Market in the middle of Cork, where vendors hawk ham and cheeses, farm-fresh produce, and smoked salmon.
  • Climb to the top of Charles Fort in Kinsale for panoramic views of the bay.

County Clare

  • Must-see attraction: Cliffs of Moher, where you can stroll atop the coastal cliffs and look for the colony of Atlantic puffins that makes its home on Goat Island.
  • Bunratty Castle: This medieval fortress is open for tours all year long; be sure to spend some time wandering through the adjacent Folk Park, a replica of a 19th-century Irish village—including a working pub.
  • Snap a pic of the Northern Hemisphere’s longest free-hanging stalactite at Doolin Cave.

Lovely trip but beware hidden costs. Extra to book direct flights & on dates chosen +$200 pp. Extra for automatic car & extra driver $210. Extra for hotel parking $20. Delta charged $75 per checked bag each way. Overall great hotels, car rental went smoothly. Booked on off season in Oct- rainy but less people. Loved the freedom of getting to choose our itinerary every day.
