This 8-day self-guided vacation takes you through northern Italy, where you'll spend three nights taking in the sights of Venice and four nights on the shores of picturesque Lake Como. During your stay, you'll have access to a manual-shift economy car so you can easily navigate the Italian countryside.
Venice has earned the nickname "La Serenissima," or "the most serene," and it's easy to see why. One reason is that no cars are allowed here, so Venice is far removed from the sounds of blaring horns and screeching tires. It's a cityscape interwoven with pedestrian walkways and historic canals, where you can hop on a gondola and glide on the water past medieval and Renaissance architecture. Some of Venice's best-known buildings are located on the 9th-century St. Mark's Square. Here, the gold-hued St. Mark's Basilica towers above this large piazza at a height of more than 300 feet.
Venice's rich artistic heritage takes center stage at Gallerie dell’Accademia, where you can see rare works by Tintoretto, Titian, and other Renaissance painters. You'll find modern masterpieces by Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Jackson Pollock at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

Since Roman times, the well-to-do have built massive villas along Lake Como, from Pliny the Younger to Matt Damon and George Clooney. The lake, shaped like a "Y," is carved between the Rhaetian Mountains, surrounded by gorgeous green mountainsides and snowcapped peaks.
The ferry is the preferred mode of transport in Lake Como. You can ride one from your hotel to other charming hamlets that are situated around the lake. One of these hamlets is Bellagio, northeast of Como near where the southern branches of the lake meet. It's been dubbed the "Pearl of the Lake." Take a stroll through the town and you'll see Romanesque architecture, gelato shops, and romantic sidewalk cafes. It's also worth it to ride the century-old Como-Brunate funicular rail, which chugs up the mountainside and offers bird's-eye views of the lake below.
