Cozy Bed and Breakfast on Pacific Ocean Bluff

When dawn breaks over the Pacific near the Mendocino Coast in Elk, California, fog sometimes enshrouds two massive stones looming over the coastal waters. Known as the Kissing Dinosaurs, these calcified rock formations mimic the creatures for which they're named, with wrinkled rock trunks and moss-covered backs. Located across from these canoodling sea statues, Greenwood Pier Inn seems to soak in the ocean’s romantic vibe. It’s a feel that permeates the bed and breakfast, from its cliff-side hot tub and English-style gardens to its avant-garde marble and tile décor crafted by the owner.

From the private decks connected to several guest rooms, visitors can overlook Greenwood Cove or communicate with the migrating whales, dolphins, and sea lions that frolic within eyeshot. Between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., a courier delivers a wire basket stuffed with breakfast treats, such as thickly sliced bacon and sugar-dusted french toast.

The oceanfront Greenwood Pier Cafe spotlights local seafood, such as scaloppini of wild king salmon with spinach and red-rebel potatoes. The café’s windows look out on vegetable patches, babbling fountains, and Buddha figurines. Although dinner can also be delivered to the guest rooms, those strolling to the café discover the inn's hidden bits of whimsical landscaping, such as goldfish ponds and flowers planted in boots.

Elk, California: Scenic Arts Alcove on Historical Highway 1

The unincorporated community of Elk is located off of California’s historical Highway 1, known for its scenic vistas of Pacific coastline. Called “one of America’s unofficial pilgrimage routes” by Travel + Leisure, the Pacific Coast Highway connects San Diego to northern California’s Redwood National Park. If you’re exploring the Pacific Coast Highway, take the half-hour drive north to the small town of Mendocino, most of which is a U.S. Historic District for its Victorian-style architecture.

Back in Elk, rugged bluffs and booming tides inspire local artisans who celebrate the interplay between man and nature through carvings, paintings, jewelry, and crafts. Greenwood Pier Inn’s Garden Shop and Country Store showcase the work of Elk’s artists as well as imports from Bali and mosaics of sea stones, earthenware, and broken china washed ashore from ancient shipwrecks.
