Northwoods Canoe Trip with Lodging

Northern Minnesota’s Northwoods region encompasses 1 million acres of wilderness, including more than 1,000 clear-water lakes. During an outfitted canoe trip hosted by Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters, you’ll explore this natural landscape and view its abundant wildlife while camping in its forests. Guests can choose a four-, six-, or seven-night trip, and each option includes at least one night of private bunk lodging.

Each canoe package includes the following:

  • Royalex canoes with portaging yokes, paddles, and life vests
  • Eureka tents, full-zipper sleeping bags, and packs
  • Meals, snacks, and beverages, which are selected by passengers before the trip
  • Cooking equipment including a frying pan, coffeepot, plates, and utensils
  • Assorted toiletries
  • Maps

Nearly 50 different canoe routes wend through the wilderness, and the staff can help you plan an itinerary based on your skill level and the duration of your trip. One of the most beginner-friendly routes goes through Caribou Lake, where you can fish for bass and walleye or watch for moose in the surrounding woodlands. Seasoned canoeists can head to Gaskin Lake via a series of waterways linked by small rapids. The campsites here are rustic and remote, and you might hear a pack of timber wolves howling nearby.

Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters

Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters sits on its namesake trail, a 60-mile paved road that runs past glacier lakes and pine forests. Guests will spend one, two, or three nights in a private bunkhouse room here, depending on the length of their canoe trip, and each room has access to a shared central shower house. Some packages include add-ons such as a two-hour canopy tour, guided naturalist activities, and a breakfast in the lodge dining room (check the What You Get section for a detailed breakdown of what each package includes). For all other meals, head to one of the lodge’s onsite restaurants for local specialties.
