New Hampshire’s Seacoast: Pristine Shoreline, Beach Towns, and Historic Architecture

Compared to other New England states, the coast of New Hampshire—known locally as the Seacoast region—is pretty narrow and short. But it manages to pack in a lot, including a nearly unbroken string of beaches mixed with dunes and hardwood forests. The 18-mile stretch begins around Seabrook, where you can tour a nuclear-power plant that sparked protests in the 1980s, leading to a ban on future plants in the United States. About 15 minutes from here is Hampton Beach, a honky-tonk town known for its classic boardwalk. Picture fried-dough stands, penny arcade games, and palm readers. Visitors flock here during the summer for free evening concerts. For a more tranquil scene, continue north to the small town of Rye to take in seaside mansions and a state park with a quiet beachfront.

A large section of the shoreline remains relatively untouched beginning around historic Portsmouth. This port city prospered before the Revolutionary War, and you can see plenty of lavish architecture that dates back as far as the 18th century. Many of the old brick warehouses downtown have been transformed into boutiques and cafés. There are also many house museums, including the more than 40 buildings that make up Strawbery Banke Museum, one of New England’s largest outdoor living history complexes.
