Boothbay Harbor, Maine: Century-old Footbridge and Dockside Dining
The most scenic way to get across the harbor—when you’re not taking a boat—is by walking along the historic Boothbay Harbor Footbridge. Its 1,000 feet of wooden planks have spanned the waters for more than a century. On either side of the harbor, you’ll find all the hallmarks of an old-fashioned New England town: dockside chowder houses, tiny ice cream parlors, and colorful sweets shoppes that sell saltwater taffy and Swedish fish. At Boothbay Railway Village, vintage locomotives steam down a model railroad, and you can check out a 1911 Model T, a Rolls Royce, and a 1957 Pontiac Thunderbird. Boothbay Opera House has been the big music venue downtown since 1894; it still hosts live bluegrass, Celtic, and country performances.
Sailboats, kayaks, and schooners are popular ways to get around the harbor. By day, you can take a boat ride to see several of Maine’s famous lighthouses in the distance. As night falls, schooners skim the waters to catch the best view of the setting sun. Year-round, nature lovers can explore the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens—250 acres that contain butterfly gardens, waterfalls, and tree-lined trails.<p>
