Northumberland County, Ontario: Forests, Scenic Waterways, and Historic Towns

Located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, Northumberland County is something of a backyard playground for Toronto. It sits about an hour outside the city, and it’s lined with waterways, beaches, and wide stretches of rolling countryside. You can do everything from hunting and hiking to snowmobiling at the Northumberland County Forest, and you might even see coyote, deer, and black bears there.

Most of the country is cut through by the Trent-Severn Waterway, a historic route linking two Great Lakes that was once used for lumber transport. Today, the passage is open from May to October for recreational use, including leisure cruises. One of the highlights of the waterway is its hydraulic lift lock. Something of a cross between an elevator and a giant bathtub, the lock ferries boats from one water level to another. The shores of the Trent-Severn are open year-round.

Northumberland County is full of charming, quiet rural towns. The biggest of them, Cobourg, still feels like a small town, thanks largely to its strong sense of heritage. It was originally settled in 1798; some of the city’s oldest buildings can be found downtown, including the town hall, which now houses a gallery and concert hall alongside some town offices. Head to the Cobourg Museum Foundation to learn more about the local history. This limestone complex may have been used as a military barracks for the British in the War of 1812.

The beds are not comfortable and bedrooms are so small. The cutlery and mug set are not complete. The air condition is very noisy.

The room was teeny tiny and cold. Had to go two flights down to the basement to watch a DVD. Hot tub was there but not available for guests to use. Verbally gave us two choices for dinner. No menu or prices offered. Felt we had to whisper in our room. Picture on the ad showed a pier so we thought it was near the water. It was near the water but couldn’t see it from our room and the owners didn’t even know how to get to a spot on the lake that we could access it for a walk. They were giving us vague directions (drive up this way and turn down that way maybe). We overlooked the road and view of a house across the street.

Here is my horrific story, I booked my husbands B'day weekend at this place a few months back. Two days before checking in, Peter calls me to tell me that his daughter was coming home and we had to cancel our trip. I was quite shocked because he ruined a perfect weekend. These guys are a perfect example of being non-professional . If you guys book this place, please have a plan B. He also said renting this place via Groupon is an alternate way of publicity and he was not font of it. He prefers people paying directly to him. I lost it and asked him for a full refund and after 2 days worth of thought he gave me a refund. Anyway, I am here looking for other deals at the last minute wishing myself good luck because I decided to stay at this place.
