Historic Lodge in Colorado Rockies

In 1914, University of Colorado football coach Enoch “Joe” Mills and his wife, Ethel, built a large wooden lodge on the north shoulder of Prospect Mountain in the Colorado Rockies. Named Crags Lodge for the mountains surrounding it, the inn counts such notable guests as poet Robert Frost among those who’ve stayed here over the nearly 100 years it’s been in operation. Now called The Historic Crags Lodge, the hotel still has a homey feel to it as well as unsurpassed views of the Rockies and the surrounding forest. Inside, you’ll find honey-colored wood floors and, in the main living room, a fireplace surrounded by the building’s original furniture.

Pinewood-decorated studio and one-bedroom units look out on the mountains surrounding the town of Estes Park below. Kitchenettes in one-bedroom units come equipped with a stovetop burner and a mini refrigerator. Their wine selection includes an oak-barrel aged Merlot with flavors of dark berries with a caramel finish. While you’re staying here, you’ll be minutes away from Rocky Mountain National Park and within walking distance of the shops and restaurants of Estes Park.

Estes Park, Colorado: Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park

At an elevation of 7,522 feet above sea level, Estes Park is a small mountain town known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Each year, more than three million people visit the park, enjoying access to 300 miles of hiking trails and beautiful mountain vistas. You can go on guided snowshoe or sightseeing tours or drive—conditions permitting—along the Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway for breathtaking views.

In town, you can wander the pedestrian-friendly streets and browse quaint local shops, stopping for homemade taffy and fudge before sitting down to a meal at one of the many restaurants in the area. Downtown Estes Park also has a popular outdoor ice rink on the weekends starting November 21.
