European-Style Inn Close to Pike Place Market and Space Needle

Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood sits atop the highest hill in the city, and it was once a lofty haven for the city’s cultural elite. Wealthy residents built mansions here in the traditional Queen Anne–style architecture, which usually employs patterned rooftop shingles and steeply pitched roofs. These houses subsequently inspired the neighborhood’s name. The European-style Inn at Queen Anne fits in nicely with its historical surroundings—it has handsome brickwork covered in crawling ivy. Built in 1928, the inn has some Old-World touches such as coved ceilings, arched doorways, and antique furnishings.

The inn is located downtown, so it’s easy to access some of the city’s biggest attractions, such as the 605-foot Space Needle and its observation deck. From here, there are views of Mount Rainier on one side and seaplanes and ferries cutting through Puget Sound on the other. Just over a mile from the inn is the famed Pike Place Market, where you can watch aproned fishmongers toss hulking salmon and halibut across the room.

After a day of exploring, you can return to the hotel and its unpretentious guest rooms, each equipped with a microwave, stovetop, and small refrigerator. All rooms have private bathrooms and come with either one queen bed or two twin beds.

Downtown Seattle: Gourmet Coffee Shops and Art Galleries in Coastal Urban Center

Street performers often provide musical accompaniment as shoppers walk beneath the iconic Public Market Center sign at the open-air Pike Place Market located just about a mile northwest of the hotel. One of the most renowned attractions in Seattle, the marketplace bustles with both locals and out-of-towners browsing an array of stalls vending fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers, and meat. Before the proliferation of Starbucks on every corner, Seattleites grabbed a cup of java at the company's original coffeehouse, which first opened here in 1971.

Local gourmet coffee shops can be found in other inviting neighborhoods, too. Belltown, located about a half mile north of downtown, is an arts district filled with cafés, shops, and galleries galore. One such gallery, Roq La Rue, showcases rotating exhibits with an emphasis on pop surrealism and underground contemporary art.

From the vantage point of Kerry Park, there's a terrific view of Elliott Bay and the Seattle skyline, with the Space Needle standing prominently in the foreground. On clear days, you can search for rock carvings of the Frasier cast on the face of Mount Rainier in the distance.
