Port Antonio, Jamaica: Jamaica's First Resort Town
In 1946, during a bad storm, actor Errol Flynn's yacht washed ashore in Port Antonio, Jamaica. At the time, the port—about 60 miles from Kingston—was already somewhat well-known as a resort town for its white-sand beaches, waterfalls, and beautiful coves. But it took off further after Errol Flynn fell in love with the place—he bought nearby Navy Island, and soon the city would become glamorized in movies such as Cocktail, Club Paradise, and Lord of the Flies.
When in Port Antonio, make sure to check out the Blue Lagoon, which goes 200 feet deep with brightly colored water, as well as the tucked-away Frenchman's Cove Beach, where Lord of the Flies was filmed. If you're feeling less beachy, there's plenty to do in town. The remains of a vast mansion built for the heir of the Tiffany fortune make up the popular Folly Ruins, which are open for tours. The Main Square in downtown Port Antonio features the town's famous Clock Tower; nearby is Musgrave Markert, which has stall after stall of vegetables, crafts, street fare, and clothing.
