Property at a Glance: Jicaro Island Ecolodge

Jicaro Island Ecolodge tries to live in harmony with its beautiful setting: a private island in Lake Nicaragua. To that end, the resort—built from trees toppled by a hurricane—stocks only biodegradable soaps and uses an underground electricity system to avoid disturbing local wildlife. Its nine private casitas even blend in with the surrounding foliage. Each two-story unit is raised off the ground, featuring a thatched roof and slatted façades, affecting the appearance of a contemporary treehouse. The resort’s eco-friendly attitude and stunning scenery helped the island earn a spot on Travel + Leisure’s list of the Best Secret Islands on Earth.

  • Stylish accommodations: Relax on your private deck’s oversized hammock while enjoying views of the lake, foliage, and Mombacho Volcano. Inside, each unit is decorated with locally made furniture crafted from Rainforest Alliance-certified wood.
  • Watch chefs at work in the open-air kitchen at the onsite restaurant as they prepare grass-fed steak with chimichurri sauce and bananas foster pancakes. Though the menu changes frequently, the restaurant stays dedicated to using locally sourced ingredients.
  • Outdoor adventure: The staff can help schedule numerous tours, including nature hikes, zipline tours, and cultural tours. To explore on your own, rent a kayak and paddle around the islets’ canals.
  • Practice sun salutations during yoga classes on the resort’s dedicated yoga deck, which overlooks Lake Nicaragua and offers views of the Mombacho Volcano.
  • Pamper yourself with a shiatsu or hot-stone massage in the resort’s open-air treatment rooms, which are outfitted with private showers.
  • Sustainability practices: The lodge’s onsite chicken coop, vegetable garden, and pig farm help provide food and jobs for local families; the lodge also helps to maintain a local elementary school by providing clean, filtered water and solar panels.

Granada Isletas, Nicaragua: Volcanic Islands Off the Shores of an Old Colonial Town

Jicaro Island is one of the Granada Isletas, which are more than 300 small volcanic-rock islands in an archipelago just off the coast of Granada. Visitors arrive on the island by motorboat, and it’s easy to explore the rest of the islets by simply hopping in a kayak. One of the mainland’s highlights is the nearby Mombacho Volcano, a stratovolcano that many climb for fantastic views of Lake Nicaragua. Mombacho has varied ecosystems, including both high-altitude cloud forests and low-altitude dry forests. The volcano is also home to a wide variety of animals, including howler monkeys and iguanas.

The closest city to Jicaro Island is Granada, founded in 1524 by Spanish colonists. Today, the city offers a glimpse of the old Spanish empire at the height of its powers: there are restored cathedrals, colorful squares, and glistening bell towers. Old-fashioned horse carriages still mosey through the city’s cobblestone streets, and vendors showcase hand-carved wood toys and jewelry in the central plaza.
