All-Inclusive Resort with Live Entertainment on Pristine, Mile-Long Beach

On Antigua, hanging out is such a cherished pastime that it has its own slang term: "liming." And there's no finer place to lime than on one of the island's many beaches, known for their powder-fine sand and blue waves. Located on the island's western coast, Jolly Beach Resort & Spa takes full advantage of this idyllic shoreline with beachfront pools and ocean views from every room. According to resort associate Roberta Garzaroli, "Antigua likes to boast that it has 365 beaches, and Jolly Beach is one of the longest." The mile-long stretch of surf enables windsurfing, sailing, and kayaking—all part of the resort's all-inclusive offerings.

The sprawling, 40-acre property hosts a long list of activities around its 8,000-square-foot main pool, such as staff-led calypso dance lessons and Caribbean cocktail-mixing classes. Every evening, themed entertainment ranges from fire-eating demonstrations to Caribbean-style beach barbecues, and local bands often accompany events. If you want to simply unwind, there's a smaller pool where "nobody will bother you, except maybe a butterfly," according to Roberta. In the hotel’s open-air gazebos, staff members perform spa treatments that incorporate aloe, nutmeg, and coconut.

Most of the resort's five restaurants are also open-air and filled with refreshing trade winds; try Lydia's on the beachfront for steel-band tunes and fresh catches of the day. The same breezes cool the air along standard-room balconies, all of which have ocean views.

Antigua: Colonial History Blended with Laid-Back Island Charm

Antigua's beaches are some of the Caribbean's most pristine. Along the shore, you'll see thatched-roof bungalows and sprawling estates owned by the likes of Oprah, Eric Clapton, and Giorgio Armani. There's an equally lovely landscape beneath the waves—just offshore, Cades Reef, a 32-foot-deep (10 m) barrier reef, shelters barracuda, eels, eagle rays, and nurse sharks.

You can see lingering evidence of Antigua's colonial roots in its capital city, St. John's, about 6 miles (10 km) north of the resort. Here, Fort Barrington served as an important military defense post for the British Royal Navy as far back as 1652 and still boasts a powder magazine and a gun platform.

The island's distinct culture also shines through in its cuisine, which includes conch fritters and cornmeal fungie, a dish similar to polenta. You can sample local flavors at St. John's Saturday-morning market, which bustles with vendors selling pineapple, breadfruit, and tamarind. Next door, a smaller market showcases crafts, jewelry, and parrots selling summer's hottest feather extensions.

Could not follow through on appointments at the spa so us newly weds missed out on a couples massage during our honeymoon. Also, it's pretty run down and needs some major updating! The beach is absolutely beautiful though the vendors are a pain!
