Historic Bed and Breakfast with Award Winning Restaurant

Joseph Ambler Inn can trace its origins all the way back to William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania and one of America’s elder statesmen. Penn granted the land on which the Joseph Ambler Inn currently stands to the estate’s first owner. In the early 18th century, the estate owner built a farmhouse on 12 acres of rolling eastern Pennsylvania countryside. Today this land contains five signature buildings, including the original farmhouse, that collectively tell the story of the inn.

Many additions have come within the last 30 years, during which time present-day owner Richard Allman has meticulously modernized the property while keeping history at the forefront of the inn experience. Deluxe queen rooms, some located in the John Roberts House, feature a mix of period antiques and upscale amenities, such as two-person spa bathtubs, cable TV, and WiFi. Some have wooden four-poster beds, and some have electric fireplaces.

A complimentary full country breakfast is prepared each morning and includes sausage, eggs, bacon, french toast, and hot coffee. Later in the day, you can return to Joseph Ambler Inn's restaurant for lunch and dinner. It has an elegant atmosphere, decked out with random-width hardwood floors, handcrafted cherry tables, and original exposed-stone walls. Try pan-roasted Chilean sea bass with a glass or bottle from their extensive wine list, winner of a 2012 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

North Wales, Pennsylvania: Rolling Countryside Close to Philadelphia

The village of North Wales is located less than an hour north of the bright lights of Philadelphia, close to Valley Forge National Historic Park. It was there that General George Washington engineered his Continental Army during a winter encampment in 1777. Today a Welcome Center at the site of the historic location features artifacts, exhibits, and a short film.

For a nice day trip, head to nearby Lambertville, New Jersey, where you can browse the storefronts of more than 40 vendors selling antique furniture, vintage clothing, costume jewelry, or rare kewpie dolls resembling Grover Cleveland. Or hit the Montgomery County Wine Trail to enjoy tastings and picnics at Pennsylvania's underrated vineyards.
