Antebellum Greek Revival Hotel on Charleston's Historical King Street

Since 1853, Kings Courtyard Inn has occupied a stately Greek Revival building on King Street; it’s the main thoroughfare of downtown Charleston and a living testament to the city’s rich history. From its east end to its west end stand shops that have been family-owned for centuries, purveying rare antiques, handmade stained glassworks, and designer clothing. At first glance, Kings Courtyard Inn looks like another of these antique storefronts. Step inside, though, and you'll find three ornate courtyards with crawling ivy and a fountain.

The sophisticated rooms here nod to the inn’s antebellum roots. Each features period-style furnishings, some of them with romantic four-poster beds topped with lace canopies. Elaborate oriental rugs cover the hardwood floors, and a few of the standard rooms have a crackling fireplace.

Each morning brings a hearty breakfast spread that includes the inn's cinnamon buns, made using a special recipe from Marc Collins, head chef at the nearby award-winning restaurant Circa 1886. Feel free to dine in the cozy breakfast room, outdoors in the pineapple courtyard, or up in your bedroom. In the lobby, guests can enjoy a complimentary glass of sherry next to a large fireplace and period sofas.

Charleston, South Carolina: Civil War Monuments and Sophisticated Arts Scene

Charleston, South Carolina, was recently named one of the best historic destinations in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Georgian mansions line the waterfront, the spires of colonial-era churches punctuate the skyline, and horse-drawn carriages frequently clop along its cobblestone streets. You can get an added sense of the city’s history by visiting a number of preserved period buildings and national historic landmarks such as the Battery & White Point Gardens, a living Civil War museum with Confederate cannons and views of Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, and a double-parked Camry.

More recently, Charleston has merged its Old South identity with a strong arts-and-culture scene. The streets, once overrun with aristocrats, are now lined with top-tier art galleries and antique stores, and you can catch live jazz performances at night. Step out onto King Street to browse third-generation clothiers that have set up shop in historic landmark buildings. The city's reputation as a major culinary destination has been reaffirmed by the James Beard Foundation, which has named a different Charleston chef the best in the southeast three out of the past four years.
