Hidden-Gem Resort near Casinos and Ski Slopes

Readers of the Tahoe Daily Tribune picked Lakeside Inn and Casino hotel as the winner in the Best Casino, Loosest Slots, Friendliest Casino Employees, and Best Happy Hour categories. It didn't come as a surprise the staff at the hotel, though. “We win ‘Best of’ awards every year,” says Lakeside Inn and Casino staffer Chris Garton. “We even won Best Valet Parking, but we don’t have valet parking.” The parking area is actually adjacent to the resort’s rooms, which makes it convenient to park and then hike the nearby Lam Watah Trail which leads to Nevada Beach on Lake Tahoe.

At the onsite Latin Soul restaurant, Chef Alvaro Ochoa has been slicing and dicing for more than 24 years, crafting fare brimming with Latin American flavors. He mixes artichoke in with blue crabmeat and roasted poblano peppers to create a tasty dip for plantains, yucca chips, and garlic breadsticks. The dining-room decor has a fiery motif in its wall murals and red spiral-patterned upholstery.

The Tahoe Daily Tribune's Best Casino 2011 draws in locals and vacationers alike. The casino floor is free of gaudy excess; it features high ceilings and walls fashioned with wood paneling or river rock. A Wednesday-night class instructs on the finer points of blackjack, craps, creative nonfiction poetry, and poker, and if you're feeling up for it, there's a nightly poker tournament.

South Tahoe: Natural Splendor Meets Glitz and Gambling

Located on the eastern side of the California-Nevada border, Stateline has the glitz and glamour of Nevada's distinctive casinos but is also close to the unspoiled beauty of Lake Tahoe. It's worth it to take a day trip to Emerald Bay State Park, where you can take advantage of postcard-worthy photo opportunities of the shimmering lake surrounded by glacier-carved granite. For a scenic hike, head to the staggering Glen Alpine Falls, a 65-foot waterfall.

At night, tourists hit up Stateline’s glimmering nightclubs and take in a variety of local concerts, events, and shows.

The room was two queens. Nothing fancy and very rustic but it was clean and very comfortable. The best part was the restaurant great food. The staff from house keeping to Casino staff was helpful and friendly. I have stayed before with my family of 8 and we have always received prime rooms for the price and location to the strip.
