Four-Star Villas on a Quiet Section of White-Sand Beach
Las Villas Akumal’s thatched villas are just a few steps from the Caribbean Sea in the coastal town of Akumal, about 66 miles south of Cancún. The small resort town is just a half hour’s drive from the activities and nightlife of Playa del Carmen, but it’s far enough away to feel quiet and secluded. Here, white-sand beaches are lined with swaying palm trees, beachside bars, and small coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. You can borrow snorkeling gear to explore these underwater ecosystems or hop in a kayak; the resort rents out both for free.
All of the villas at Las Villas Akumal have fully stocked kitchens and private terraces with garden or ocean views. Some also look out onto the beachside pool area surrounded by shaded lounge chairs. Upstairs, the resort’s rooftop restaurant serves Mexican and Caribbean dishes in an open-air palapa with panoramic views of Akumal Bay.
Akumal, Mexico: Small Resort Town Along the Mayan Riviera
Akumal is situated just south of Playa del Carmen along the Mayan Riviera, a popular tourism destination on the Yucatán Peninsula. There are plenty of snorkeling spots along the town’s white-sand beaches, particularly in Yal-ku Lagoon, a brackish limestone lagoon filled with tropical fish. Farther out, you can scuba dive along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which stretches along the entire Yucatán Peninsula and shelters five species of sea turtles and one of the world’s largest congregations of whale sharks.
The area is also home to a number of Mayan archeological sites including the ruins of Tulum, just a half hour’s drive from the hotel. Tulum is believed to have been one of the most important cities of ancient Maya. Today, you can still see the remnants of frescoes inside some of the structures.
