Capon Bridge, West Virginia: Rustic Mountain Town near State Parks and Civil War History

Located in the upper northeast corner of West Virginia, Capon Bridge is a small town of about 350 people on the shores of the Cacapon River. The surrounding area is rife with American history. About 50 miles north, Fort Frederick State Park houses a stone fort that served as a frontier defense during the French and Indian War in the mid-1750s. The fort’s stone walls and barracks have been restored to their original appearance. Here, you can hike, picnic, tour the fort, or bicycle on the Western Maryland Rail Trail, which winds near the fort.

Less than 60 miles away, you can tour Antietam National Battlefield, the historic site of the deadliest one-day battle in the Civil War. Watch an introductory film and explore the museum exhibits in the Visitor Center before embarking on a self-guided 8.5-mile auto tour of the park. You can also join a park ranger for a battlefield talk.
