Italian-Themed Boutique Hotel in San Francisco’s Russian Hill Neighborhood

Housed in a newly renovated building that reopened its doors in August 2011, da Vinci Villa supplies a taste of Italy in the heart of San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood. The boutique hotel's Mediterranean influence is on display everywhere from a large re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man drawing out front to a colorful mural of the Italian countryside in the lobby.

The hotel’s 136 guest rooms circle a heated outdoor pool (open at the end of February), and many offer stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Each room features a large flat-screen TV and Tarocco bath products that perfume the air with the scent of Sicilian red oranges.

Mahogany-colored leather armchairs and brass art objects fill the downstairs lounge, where overflow crowds from the onsite restaurant, Caffé Como, sip drinks and nibble appetizers. In the restaurant, executive chef Shawn Lawrence crafts hearty Italian comfort fare such as calamari fritti, pasta, and pizzas smothered in seasonal mushrooms and cipollini onions. In the morning, a complimentary continental breakfast of pastries, fruit, and yogurt fuels trips to Fisherman’s Wharf and Ghirardelli Square.

Russian Hill, San Francisco: Historical Hilltop Neighborhood Adjacent to City's Most Popular Sights

Nestled between North Beach, the Marina District, and the salty piers of Fisherman’s Wharf, the Russian Hill neighborhood—set atop one of the city's original seven hills—is chockablock with sweeping vistas, lively bars, unique shops, and world-class restaurants. The steepest section of Lombard Street is often dubbed “the world’s crookedest street” for its series of eight hairpin turns that whip past stately mansions and meticulously manicured gardens.

With its snapshot-ready view of the Golden Gate, the beach at nearby Crissy Field makes prime real estate for a picnic assembled from the contents of the included Italian amenity basket—filled with salami and cheeses from Caffé Como and a bottle of wine. San Francisco's iconic, fog-powered cable cars put the rest of the city within reach. Visitors can catch a ride to Ghirardelli Square to scarf down a chocolate sundae and listen to live jazz, or head to Pier 39 and catch a ferry to Alcatraz.
