Cozy Guest Rooms with Victorian-Era Charm
A vintage, cast-iron post with a lion's head figurine sits in front of the property, a reminder that this site used to need a hitching post for tying up carriage-pulling horses. Dating back to the Victorian era, the Stanford Inn still features trademark elegant touches throughout the charming bed and breakfast, from floral-decorated curtains to its yellow- and blue-colored patio. Leading local attorney Thomas Lee Wilson constructed the house in 1906, and his daughter called it home until 1983. Today, innkeepers Becky and Tony Grainger pepper the hallways and rooms with artwork and artifacts collected during their travels to exotic locales such as the Great Wall of China, the Egyptian pyramids, and the Taj Mahal.
The inn's turn-of-the-century ambiance spreads into the newly decorated guest rooms, which each house wooden, antique furnishings and a queen-size bed. The included chocolates and champagne can be enjoyed within the Azalea room's pastel-yellow walls or the floral-print drapery of the Cabbage Rose room's sitting area. A jacuzzi gently massages muscles and sore rubber ducks in the bathrooms of the Victoria Rose and Azalea rooms.
Every morning, the spacious wraparound porch and dining room host gourmet, three-course breakfasts brimming with fresh, local fruits, veggies, and eggs. Two onsite restaurants quell any lingering appetites throughout the day: the Tea Room steeps more than 10 different brews, including lemon rooibos and a strawberry-orange blend, and at 555, rotating dinner specials join tried-and-true fare such as pork osso buco and fish en papillote.
Bartow, Florida: Oaks and Azaleas Surrounding Plentiful Lakeshores
Nicknamed "The City of Oaks and Azaleas," Bartow is rife with lush scenery that intertwines with central Florida's subtropical lakes. Out of 554 lakes in Polk County, 88 offer public-access boat ramps, giving anglers ample opportunity to catch the region's plentiful largemouth bass. Ornate, palatial homes populate three historic districts that hark back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the town hosted one of the first brick schoolhouses south of Jacksonville. Bartow is sandwiched between the lively tourist hubs of Tampa and Orlando, making for easy drives to those cities' attractions.
