Spacious Ocean-View Suites at Full-Service Resort

A couple dozen kilometers down the road from the Marquis Los Cabos resort, kayakers are paddling through the salty waters around El Arco. On one side of The Arch—a natural rock formation just off the southernmost tip of the second-largest peninsula on earth—the unfathomable expanse of the Pacific spreads out toward the horizon; on the other side lies the Sea of Cortez with the Gulf of California over its shoulder. These bodies of water define the lithe shape of Baja California, and back at the resort, water plays a similarly starring role. There, a two-tiered waterfall cascades past the bar level on its way down to the central pool area, presided over not by rock but by the curvature of the open-air lobby’s graceful archway. Along the resort's private beach, infinity pools seem to stretch directly into the sea, luring swimsuited sunbathers to their placid shores.

Inside the resort, which is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World organization, artistic work permeates the pueblo-style structure, from the birdlike statuary to the original paintings adorning the walls of the 203 oceanfront Ocean View junior suites. The 650-square-foot suites feature king or double beds with geometric Mexican prints racing across their quilts and Italian linens waiting to swaddle limbs weary from travel, water sports, or games of tackle Monopoly. As day breaks through the sliding-glass doors, the resort’s attentive staff delivers piping-hot coffee, nearly as effective an eye-opener as the views from each suite’s private balcony.

Guests can counterattack surprise strikes of hunger at any of the resort's three restaurants, whether they opt for the French cuisine and formal elegance of Canto del Mar, the poolside seafood of Dos Mares, or the global fare and waterfront ambiance of Vista Ballenas. Sunset invites sips of signature Marquis margaritas at El Suspiro, an outdoor bar flooded with nightly live music where clusters of wicker chairs look out over a panoramic, palm-studded vista.

To further enhance the pleasure seeking, visitors can slip into the embrace of the 15,000-square-foot spa, where the sauna's steam swaddles torsos and hot tubs hug fatigued frames. Eucalyptus footbaths and essential-oil anointments attend massages, facials, and scrubs from experienced massage therapists.

Los Cabos: Beachfront Beauty between Two Seas

Like a captain's navigating finger, the Baja California peninsula points far into southern seas, and at its tip sits Cabo San Lucas, where cactus-spiked deserts and rocky hillsides segue into sugar-sand beaches. Settled in the mid-16th century by Spanish treasure hunters and long dogged by pirates, today Cabo San Lucas draws travelers from around the world who no longer seek gold and pearls but instead seek turquoise waves and tropical fish.

The area’s balmy ocean waters shelter a maritime paradise, as is evident to almost anyone wearing a snorkeling mask, scuba helmet, or upside-down fishbowl. Swimmers can paddle past sea turtles, eels, and sea fans in Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay or travel farther north to the National Marine Sanctuary of Cabo Pulmo, which shelters a hard coral reef teeming with 800 native species. For those seeking bigger game, private charters and tours alike set off in search of the schools of striped marlin, sailfish, and yellowfin tuna that have earned Cabo San Lucas honors for numerous fishing tournaments, including the IGFA Offshore Championship, Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, and the Puerto Los Cabos World Cup.
