Calistoga, California: Easygoing Resort Town Surrounded by World-Class Wineries
A half-hour drive from Napa passes through scenic vine fields to the more laid-back resort town of Calistoga. Though silver mining and agriculture attracted waves of East Coast prospectors at the turn of 20th century, the town’s natural hot springs compelled the settlers to stick around. Today, mission- and western-style buildings stand as a testament to this down-to-earth retreat’s history. But instead of saloon madams or western-film stunt doubles, Bay Area weekenders and wine connoisseurs dot the town’s sidewalks, weaving in and out of charming boutiques, art galleries, and jazz bars.
