Placid Lakefront Resort next to State’s Biggest Water Park
North Woods Inn & Resort sits along the banks of Fourth Lake in upstate New York’s enormous Adirondack Park. From the property’s natural-wood patio, you can see the spring-fed body of water, the densely pined bluffs on its opposite shore, and the Adirondack Mountains just beyond. Fishing for northern pike or kayaking on the lake are popular ways of whiling away a low-key afternoon. In nearby Old Forge, things can get quite a bit more frenzied at the Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York’s largest water park. It’s located just 7 miles from the resort.
But you don’t need to leave the property to find adventure. North Woods rents out canoes and encourages guests to bring their own. Class V hiking trails crisscross the grounds and the adjacent woods, and there’s a heated outdoor swimming pool for refreshing, post-hike dips. Unlike most other Fourth Lake resorts, North Woods features two onsite dining options. Lakeside Tap Room’s large-screen TV and live weekend entertainment accompany casual eats and $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon drafts. Lakefront Mountaineer Restaurant provides an upscale alternative, showcasing a menu of fresh seafood and savory fillets.
Adirondack Park, New York: Water Parks and Mountain Climbing
In upstate New York, the tiny hamlet of Old Forge often records the lowest winter temperatures in the whole state. Thankfully, summer temperatures are considerably more comfortable, with average highs hovering in the mid 70s. Warmer days draw throngs of tourists to Enchanted Forest Water Safari, where visitors barrel down more than 30 water slides.
Adirondack Park occupies more than 6 million acres, making it the country’s largest National Historic Landmark. It’s home to 46 of the highest peaks in the Adirondack Range—a grouping known among mountaineers as “The 46.” Those who manage to climb each peak take their place among an exclusive group of climbers. But amateurs beware: 20 of the 46 mountains are trail-less and require bushwhacking to reach the top.
