Riviera Maya is the name given to the stretch of pristine coastline perched on the easternmost tip of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Its tropical conditions and location between the world's longest underground river and the world's second-longest coral reef yield some of the most diverse ecosystems in the Caribbean. This sandy locale is where you'll find the adults-only Ocean Maya Royale resort, which introduces visitors to all the Riviera Maya has to offer, from massages on the beach to diving in ancient Mayan cenotes.

At mealtime, you're spoiled with a choice of eight onsite restaurants, cafés, and bars. El Charro specializes in Mexican cuisine with a poolside outdoor dining deck. Head to beachfront La Dolce Vita for Italian eats and drinks in the adjacent margarita bar.

The selection of resort activities is just as varied. Ocean Maya Royale has an onsite PADI dive center with snorkeling and diving courses and guided trips to the nearby barrier reef. You can also rent jet skis and kayaks for personal exploration of the Caribbean coast. The Despacio Spa Centre presents a more laid-back alternative with numerous options for pampering.

Mexico's Riviera Maya: Rich with History and Tropical Calm

Just south of Cancun, the Riviera Maya is a nearly 80-mile stretch of Caribbean coastline fronted by towns rich in Mexican culture. For some of the area’s best beaches, clubs, and snorkeling reefs, head to the rapidly growing city of Playa del Carmen. Farther south, Tulum sits on a perch of rocky bluffs and is better known for ancient ruins including temples and a cliff-side castle. The inhabitants of Tulum—which means "walled" in Mayan—first erected the city's outer fortress to protect themselves from belligerent tribes. Today, the wall guards the archeological zone, beginning with an entryway of two corbel arches and a limestone tomb built over an underwater cave.

A scenic drive south brings you to the Yucatan Peninsula's legendary limestone cenotes, freshwater sinkholes created by an underground river system. The Cenote Cristalino gives the daring a chance to jump from terraced outcroppings into an exposed pool or go snorkeling in underwater caves. You can also watch locals expertly flip, dive, and synchronized cannonball into the clear water at this popular weekend hangout.
