9-Day China Vacation and Yangtze River Cruise
The mighty Yangtze River cuts through China’s landscape for almost 4,000 miles, rushing past booming metropolises, ancient pagodas, and mammoth gorges before spilling into the East China Sea near Shanghai. The highlight of this China vacation is a 4-night cruise on the Yangtze—an excursion that Frommer’s ranks among the world’s top 10 river cruises. Click here to view the full itinerary. This vacation includes:
- Round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), or New York (JFK)
- Alternate departure dates/gateways may be available for an additional fee.
- 1 night’s stay in a double-occupancy room at Yangtze Hotel in Wuhan
- 4 nights’ stay onboard Victoria Cruises ship
- 2 nights’ stay in a double-occupancy room at Chongqing Greet Hotel in Chongqing
- Seven breakfasts, three lunches, and three dinners
- Extension to Hong Kong, Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai is available
Days 1–3: Wuhan
You’ll land in Hong Kong and take an overnight flight to Wuhan, a port city on the Yangtze River. The densely populated metropolis boasts a surprising number of natural lakes and public parks. If time permits, check out some of the local attractions; we’ve listed a couple of our favorites below. On day 3, a high-speed train whisks you to Yichang, where you’ll board the Victoria Cruises ship to sail the Yangtze River.
- View from the top: Yellow Crane Tower stands more than 150 feet tall atop Snake Hill and offers panoramic views of Wuhan.
- Must-see attraction: At Guiyuan Temple, 500 gilded statues depict enlightened disciples, or luohan. A tradition at the temple is to count statues until you reach the number of your age, and then buy a matching luohan card that holds your fortune.
Days 4–6: Yangtze River Cruise
On day 4, the boat disembarks from Yichang to cruise through some of the river’s most stunning geography, with opportunities to debark for optional excursions.
- Xiling Gorge: This nearly 50-mile-long pass—the longest of the Three Gorges—presents a jagged landscape of karst caves, rocky shoals, and rocks that resemble human and animal figures.
- Wu Gorge’s mist-veiled banks are studded with 12 peaks. The tallest, Goddess Peak, is crowned by a rock that resembles a goddess with her head bowed.
- Optional tours: Explore Three Gorges Dam, the highest powered dam on the planet, or Fengdu Ghost City’s grotesque statues of demons and ghosts (extra fees apply).
Days 7–9: Chongqing
Your cruise ends on day 7 in Chongqing, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel. You’ll have a full day to explore the city on your own or take optional tours.
- Arhat Temple: This 1,000-year-old Buddhist temple features a bronze statue of Buddha, a mural of Siddhartha, and rock carvings that date back to the Song Dynasty.
- Sample Sichuan cuisine: A popular dish in town is the hot pot, a spicy stew made with peppers, vegetables, and thin slices of meat.
- Optional tour: The rock walls at Dazu grottoes are carved with more than 10,000 images from Buddhist and Taoist lore that date back to the ninth century (extra fees apply).
