All-Inclusive Resort with Tropical Gardens Just Minutes from Beach

Modeled and named after the nearest town, Puerto Plata Village features a sprawl of lush tropical gardens and pastel-colored, Victorian-style buildings. Though its architecture evokes a bygone era, the all-inclusive resort is hardly old-fashioned—the rooms boast modern climate-controlled systems, and there's even an onsite dance club. Puerto Plata Village lies within a short walk (or a five-minute hotel shuttle) from the beach, where you'll have access to a bar and grill, a children's playground, and miles of Caribbean seashore.

Puerto Plata Village caters to a diverse set of travelers, from singles to families with young children. On the main resort property, there's one pool designated for kids and a separate one for adults with a poolside bar. In addition to complimentary bike rentals, this all-inclusive stay features a range of water activities such as sailing, kayaking, and scuba diving.

Meals consist of a buffet breakfast and lunch and dinner served in four different restaurants specializing in Italian, Caribbean, and Mexican fare. Reservations can be made at the guest services desk; all of the specialty restaurants maintain a casual-elegant dress code that prohibits shorts, tank tops, and Teletubbies costumes.

Puerto Plata earned its namesake in 1493 when Columbus remarked that its coast at sunset resembled a sea of silver, or plata. The coastal city contains many of the Dominican Republic's most prominent cultural attractions, including a town square lined with Victorian homes and a colonial-era fortress once used to ward off pirates. Among Puerto Plata's most visited landmarks is the Parque Nacional La Isabela, one of the first European settlements in the New World. Only ruins remain now, but you can see the outlines of Columbus's house, a church, and an observation tower.

Beaches draw the lion's share of tourists, but for an outdoor alternative, head to the southwest side of town and take the cable car to the top of Mt. Isabel de Torres. Once on the mountaintop, you can join a guided nature walk though the botanical gardens, which flourish with nearly 600 plants and flowers, including passion-fruit vines and mango trees.
