It would be nice to have a few hooks around to hang things particularly in the bathroom. Maybe on the back of the door? A small bed side table would have been nice next to the bed near to the bathroom. The blinds in our room didn't work. The curtain next to the bathroom wasn't big enough to block out the morning light. We never did figure out the heater.

Located near the Eldorado National Forest, this small inn has six unique rooms and an outdoor lounging area

Quaint Mountain Inn in Historic Mining Town

Georgetown, California, once had the peculiar nickname of Growlersburg, a designation that came from the large quartz rocks seamed with gold that “growled” in the pockets of miners when they walked. Once a major gold-rush camp, Georgetown has preserved several of its historic buildings, all shadowed by the mountains in Eldorado National Forest. Just off Georgetown’s main rural highway is the Rock Creek Inn, a quaint mountain hotel with just six rooms, each named after gold or a gemstone to pay tribute to Georgetown’s beginnings.

All of Rock Creek Inn’s rooms are uniquely decorated, with color tones matching individual room names—Turquoise, Emerald, Onyx, Ruby, Gold Nugget, or Diamond. In the Gold Nugget room, for instance, you’ll find golden-pine paneling and gently sloping ceilings with exposed wooden beams, along with a separate dining nook, almost like a miner’s cabin. The largest room is the Diamond suite, which has handmade furnishings, shimmering blue and gold hues, and a fully equipped kitchen. Outside, you’ll find furniture for lounging around a fire pit so you can enjoy the crisp mountain air into the night.

Georgetown, California: Eldorado National Forest and Wineries

Located about an hour northeast of Sacramento, Georgetown is a quaint place with family-owned shops and upscale restaurants. Its location in the Sierra Nevada foothills means you’ll be close to El Dorado wine country—there are more than 30 wineries in the surrounding area, and most are open year-round for tastings and tours.

Georgetown sits directly on the border of Eldorado National Forest, often called the “Gateway to the Sierras.” More than two million people visit this park each year for its hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails and scenic vistas of rivers and lakes. Eldorado is a popular spot for whitewater rafting and fishing as well, and bald eagles and peregrine falcons are routinely spotted soaring above its mountain peaks.
