Scenic Golf Resort Set amid Scrub-Covered Foothills

About 45 minutes northeast of San Diego, the Cuyamaca Mountains feature a unique landscape known as chaparral, marked by spiny shrubs such as buckwheat, goldenrod, and yucca. The resulting scenery is a vibrant quilt of greens and browns, fading to smoky blue peaks in the distance. Located in the Cuyamaca foothills, San Vicente Resort hosts several activities amid this scenic backdrop, from trail rides at adjacent equestrian centers to golfing at an 18-hole championship course designed by Ted Robinson.

With two days of unlimited golfing (included in one option), you'll get a golf cart to explore the course's rolling lime-green hills, a dramatic contrast to the surrounding scrubland. You can also use the resort’s complimentary gear during a game of tennis at the lighted courts, or take a dip in the heated pool, which features painted lap lanes.

You can find some of the best views of the course at the The Par Lounge’s outdoor dining patio. Live bands play here every Friday and Saturday night. Next door, the Oaks Grille serves pizza, pasta, and burgers, and the restaurant also hosts breakfast each morning, with entrees ranging from the jalapeño-and-sausage omelet ($9) to the belgian-waffle breakfast ($8.50). After dinner, retire to a king or two-queen golf-course-view room, which will also overlook the golf course from a private balcony.

Ramona, California: River Valley Wineries near San Diego Museums

Thanks to a Mediterranean climate and the sheltering peaks of the surrounding Cuyamaca Mountains, the town of Ramona forms an ideal spot for winemaking. Dozens of wineries have set up shop in the area’s rural stretches, replacing the poultry and dairy farms that used to be here. A variety of local wine-tasting tours allow you to hop from vineyard to vineyard to taste the valley’s zinfandel, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and other varietals.

Ramona also lies less than an hour from San Diego, well worth a visit for its iconic Balboa Park. Known for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, Balboa Park is home to 17 separate museums, as well as the giant pandas at the world-famous and much-beloved San Diego Zoo. There's also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists continuously produce pottery, hand-blown glass, and oil paintings for sale.
